
Hugenoot Cattle: South Africa’s Beef Genetic Treasure
The Hugenoot breed of cattle is evidence of South Africa's creative strategy for producing profitable and sustainable beef. Hugenoots, a cross between the resilient Afrikaner and the productive Charolais breeds, were created to flourish in the nation's varied and demanding farming conditions (Farmers Weekly, 2025).
Dennis Solomon of Crocodile Valley Estates started the Hugenoot breed's development in the 1960s in the Transvaal's tropical bushveld (Farmers Weekly, 2025). The objective was to blend the Charolais' superior beef production skills with the Afrikaners' resilience and ease of calving (Farmers Weekly, 2025).
